How does a tilt sensor measure the tilt angle of an object?

Publish Time: 2023-12-21

A tilt sensor is a sensor used to measure the tilt angle of an object, and its measurement principle can vary according to different sensor types. Here are several common methods for measuring angles with tilt sensors:

Electronic level: An electronic level is a sensor that measures tilt angle through the acceleration of gravity. It usually consists of three acceleration sensors, which can measure acceleration values in three directions and calculate the tilt angle. Electronic levels have high accuracy and stability and are often used for precision measurement and calibration.

Water bubble inclinometer: The water bubble inclinometer is a sensor that measures the tilt angle through water bubbles. It usually consists of a glass or plastic tube filled with bubbles of liquid, such as water or other clear liquids. When the object tilts, the bubbles move and indicate the direction and angle of tilt. The water bubble inclinometer has the advantages of simplicity, practicality, and low price, but its accuracy is low.

Fiber optic tilt sensor: Fiber optic tilt sensor uses the transmission characteristics of optical fiber to measure tilt angle. It usually consists of a light emitter and optical fiber. The light emitter emits light and transmits it to the receiver through the optical fiber. When an object is tilted, the optical fiber bends, causing light scattering and transmission loss, which changes the intensity of light received by the receiver. The tilt angle can be determined by measuring changes in light intensity. Fiber optic tilt sensors have the advantages of high accuracy, good stability, and high temperature resistance, but they are more expensive.

Gyroscope: A gyroscope is a sensor that measures the angle of rotation through the principle of conservation of angular momentum. It usually consists of a high-speed rotating rotor with one or more gyro sensors installed axially on the rotor. When an object is tilted, the rotor spins and causes the gyroscope sensor to sense a rotational acceleration. The tilt angle can be determined by measuring the rotational acceleration. Gyroscopes have the advantages of high accuracy, high stability and low drift, but they are more expensive.

The above are several common methods for tilt sensors to measure angles. Different application scenarios require the selection of appropriate tilt sensors based on specific needs.
